Aram - Aram

A general term for the genus Arum, part of the Araceae family (APG classification: Araceae). It is a tuberous plant native to the Mediterranean coast and Western Asia, with 15 original species. Although it is a different genus, it looks very similar to konjac, and is planted in pots or flower beds by people who like unusual plants. It is planted in the fall, but in cold regions such as Hokkaido, fall planting is impossible. The main varieties are Italicum (white flowers) and Palestinum (also known as black calla, black-purple flowers). Both species bloom from late April to early May, with heart-shaped leaves, flowers (spatulas) that are green on the outside, and beautiful red fruits.

サトイモ科（APG分類：サトイモ科）アラム属の総称。15種の原種があり、地中海沿岸地方、西アジア原産の塊茎植物。属は違うがコンニャクそっくりで、珍奇植物を好む人々の間で鉢植えや花壇植えにされる。秋植えとするが、北海道など寒冷地では秋植えは無理である。おもな品種はイタリカム（白色花）、パレスティナム（別名ブラックカラー、黒紫色花）。両種とも4月下旬から5月上旬咲きで、葉は心臓形、花（仏炎包(ぶつえんほう)）はいずれも外側が緑色、果実が赤く美しい。
