A national athletics movement that began in the Czech Republic and spread among the Slavic peoples. Sokol means "hawk" in Czech. In the second half of the 19th century, athletic associations were formed throughout the Czech Republic to promote and teach gymnastics, group dance, fencing, boxing, and outdoor theater. Gradually, Sokol was organized among Slavic peoples other than the Czech Republic, and the Slavic Sokol Federation was formed in 1908, with federations from the Czech Republic, Croatia, Poland, Russia, and other countries joining. After World War II, it was dissolved under the Communist government, and national athletic competitions were called Spartakiads, following the Soviet Union's example. Since 1989, Sokol organizations have been revived in various places. → Related topics Mass games Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
