...A perennial succulent plant of the Vulaceae family (illustration). It produces many bright flowers, and is cultivated as a flowering plant rather than as a succulent. Native to the Cape Province of South Africa, it was introduced to Japan in the early Meiji period and spread to warm regions. The stems are slightly woody and grow in carpet-like clusters. The leaves are opposite, fleshy, linear, slightly triangular, curved upward, fused at the base, and pointed at the tip, 3-6 cm long. From April to June, a single flower usually grows at the tip of the stem. The flower is 5-7 cm in diameter. The petals are numerous and at first glance resemble chrysanthemum flowers, but the center of the flower has many stamens and five carpels. ...
