An island in the Indian Ocean, about 240 km northeast of Cape Asir (Cape Guardafi), the eastern tip of Africa. It is part of the Republic of Yemen. It consists of a plateau 200-300 m above sea level. Date palms, cotton, and tobacco are cultivated, and sheep, goats, and cattle are raised. It is inhabited by the descendants of people who came from the Arabian Peninsula and the east coast of the African continent. It became a British protectorate in 1886.
