This is an old town in Isawa County, located in the southwest of Iwate Prefecture, occupying the alluvial fan of the Isawa River, a tributary of the Kitakami River, and the western mountain range. Settlements have been formed on the alluvial fan since ancient times, and Tsunozuka Kofun remains. In 1953, Ishibuchi Dam was completed in the west, and land reclamation has progressed, with vegetables and tobacco leaves being produced. The town is particularly famous for its cultivation of bell peppers. In February 2006, it merged with Mizusawa City, Esashi City, Isawa County Maesawa Town, and Kinugawa Village to become a city, Oshu City. 298.02 km2 . Population 17,759 (2003). 岩手県南西部,北上川の支流胆沢川の扇状地と西部山地を占める胆沢郡の旧町。扇状地は古くから集落ができ,角塚(つのづか)古墳が残る。1953年西部に石淵ダムが完成,開田が進み,野菜,葉タバコも産する。特にピーマンの栽培で有名。2006年2月,水沢市,江刺市,胆沢郡前沢町,衣川村と合併し市制,奥州市となる。298.02km2。1万7759人(2003)。
