[Died] July 30, 2007. Swedish stage director and film director. Born into a pastor's family, he graduated from Stockholm High School (University). He started his professional career as a director in 1944, directing classics and new works such as August Strindberg's Ghost Sonata, Molière's Don Juan, and Henrik J. Ibsen's Peer Gynt. From 1963 to 1966, he served as general director of the Royal Theatre (Dramarten) in Stockholm, where he worked to reform the stage machinery, including lighting, and to train new talent. He also made his debut as a film director in 1946, and his subsequent works received international acclaim. Her representative works include The Seventh Seal (1957), Wild Strawberries (1957, Golden Bear Award at the Berlin International Film Festival), The Virgin Fountain (1960), Through the Looking Glass (1961), Winter Light (1961), Silence (1963), and Fanny och Alexander (1982, Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards), and she showed keen observations of the inner world of human beings. Her last work was Sarabande (2003).

スウェーデンの演出家，映画監督。牧師の家に生まれ，ストックホルム高等学校 (大学) を卒業。 1944年にプロの演出家として出発，アウグスト・ストリンドベリの『幽霊ソナタ』を第1作として，モリエールの『ドン・ジュアン』，ヘンリク・J.イプセンの『ペール・ギュント』などの古典や新作を演出。 1963～66年ストックホルムの王立劇場 (ドラマーテン) の総監督として照明などの舞台機構の改革や新人の育成に努めた。一方，1946年に映画監督としてデビュー，その後の作品は国際的に高い評価を受けた。代表作に『第七の封印』 Det Sjunde Inseglet (1957) ，『野いちご』 Smultronstället (1957，ベルリン国際映画祭金熊賞) ，『処女の泉』 Jungfrukällan (1960) ，『鏡の中にある如く』 Saasom i en Spegel (1961) ，『冬の光』 Nattsvardsgästerna (1961) ，『沈黙』 Tystnaden (1963) ，『ファニーとアレクサンデル』 Fanny och Alexander (1982，アカデミー賞外国語映画賞) などがあり，人間の内的世界への鋭い観察を示した。遺作は『サラバンド』 (2003) 。
