A ruler used in architecture during the Yamato period. It was named after the Koreans who brought it to Japan. It is a scale where 1 shaku is 1 shaku 1 sun 7 bu 6 rin (approximately 356 mm) of the Kanejaku (carpenter's scale). In the Ritsuryo system, 1 shaku 2 sun is considered a ta shaku, and the Ritsuryo Shukai shows that 5 shaku is equivalent to 6 shaku of modern shaku. Since a ta shaku in the Nara period is approximately 9 sun 8 bu of the Kanejaku, 1 shaku is 1.2 times that, or 1 shaku 1 sun 7 bu 6 rin. This scale was used to measure land before 713. When the debate over the reconstruction of Horyu-ji Temple arose, those who were against the reconstruction famously used the komei shaku as evidence.
