Yeshaya; Book of Isaiah

Yeshaya; Book of Isaiah
The largest prophetic book in the Old Testament, named after Isaiah. It is believed to have been written by several people, and is divided into three parts based on its contents. Chapters 1-39 of Part 1 were written by the prophet Isaiah around the 8th century BCE, but it is a compilation of various themes centered on Isaiah's prophecies, some of which were compiled by Isaiah himself, and some (chapters 11-19, 21, 23-27, and 32-35) by his later disciples. Chapters 36-39 are likely quotations from 2 Kings 18-20. Chapters 40-66 were certainly written by someone else, and of these, chapters 40-55 are called "Second Isaiah," which is said to have been written during the late Babylonian captivity, and chapters 56-66 are called "Third Isaiah." Part 1 is centered on the prophet's warning to Jewish leaders around the 8th century BCE to place all their trust in God rather than relying on political tactics. The fate of those who oppose God is also foretold in the prophecy about the birth of Emmanuel (male name "God with us"), who will reign with peace. The Second Isaiah was probably written about two centuries later, and it proclaims words of consolation and liberation to the persecuted people, and speaks of hope for salvation. Chapters 56 to 66 are centered on encouragement and instruction for the people after they return home, and the whole book is thought to have been compiled around the third century BCE.
