French moralist. Born in Aix-en-Provence, he initially dreamed of success as a soldier, but gave up due to injuries. After that, he found a way to thrive in literature despite his poor health, and in 1746 he published " Introduction à la connaissance de l'esprit humain " (Introduction to the Knowledge of the Human Mind) with "Maxims and Meditations", but died young one year later. Despite repeated misfortunes, the philosophy expressed in his Maxims was optimistic, and his emphasis on emotion was a precursor to Romanticism.
