…It is usually known simply as channel swimming, and since British swimmer M. Webb completed the swim in 21 hours and 45 minutes in August 1975, channel swimmers from all over the world have attempted the crossing every year, making it an annual event. The first woman to successfully cross the Channel was American G. Ederle in 1926, who completed the swim in 14 hours and 34 minutes. The first Japanese to do so was Shoichi Nakajima in 1970, but was not officially recognized by the Channel Crossing Association (CSA) because he was wearing a wetsuit. In 1982, Eiko Onuki completed the swim in 9 hours and 32 minutes, becoming the first officially recognized Japanese person to cross the Channel. …
