Akagashi - Akagashi

Japanese: アカガシ - あかがし
Akagashi - Akagashi

An evergreen tall tree of the Fagaceae family (APG classification: Fagaceae). It can reach a height of 20 meters, with gray-black bark that is smooth on young trees but bald and scaly on older trees. The leaves are alternate, elliptical, and tail-like at the tip, and are the largest of all oaks at 7 to 20 centimeters long, giving it the nickname of Ooak. The leaves are entire, dark green on the upper side and bright green on the lower side. The nuts mature in October of the following year. The cupule has six to seven layers of horizontal rings. It is common in the warm to lower temperate zones of Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, and is the most cold-resistant of all oaks. It is also found on the Korean Peninsula and China. The name Akagashi comes from the color of the wood (reddish brown), and it is used for utensils and other things because it is hard and strong.
