Abbreviation for tactical air navigation system. Radio navigation aid that provides azimuth and distance information from ground stations to aircraft in flight. Also called tactical navigation system or ultra-high frequency omnidirectional distance measuring device. This system was developed for military use and uses UHF radio waves transmitted in a pulsed format. Civilian aircraft that do not have a TACAN receiver cannot obtain azimuth information from this system, but distance information can be obtained from DME (distance measuring equipment), which has almost the same functions. For civilian aircraft, azimuth information can be obtained from VOR (Very High Frequency Omnidirectional Radio Beacon), so there are now many facilities that have VOR and TACAN stations that can be used for both civilian and military purposes, and these facilities are called VORTAC. VORTAC has an effective range of 40 nautical miles (about 72 kilometers) and ground stations are installed at key points along the air route. tactical air navigation systemの略称。
