Financial statements such as balance sheets and income statements are prepared according to established accounting standards, but not all companies use the same standards to settle accounts. When using financial indicators to make investment decisions, it is important to check what accounting standards the company used to prepare its financial statements. There is a wide range of accounting standards to choose from within the same country, and an even wider range of accounting standards exists internationally. Currently, unified standards called "International Financial Reporting Standards" are being created, and in Japan, reflecting this situation, efforts are being made to shift from the previous system centered on "individual financial statements" to a system centered on "consolidated financial statements."

貸借対照表や損益計算書などの財務諸表は、決められた会計基準に従って作成されますが、すべての企業が同一の基準で決算を行っているわけではありません。財務指標を利用して投資判断を行う場合は、その企業がどのような会計基準で財務諸表を作成したのかを確認することが重要で、その会計基準は同一国の中でも選択の幅があり、また、国際間では更に幅広い会計基準が存在します。現在、「国際会計基準」という統一基準が作成されつつあり、日本でもこのような状況を反映して従来の「個別財務諸表」を中心とした制度から、「連結財務諸表」を中心とした制度への転換が図られております。
