Hozan-ji Temple on Mount Ikoma. The head temple of the Shingon sect of Buddhism in Ikoma City, Nara Prefecture. It is also called Toshidasan and Hannya Cave. It is located directly below the protruding rock peak of the hill on the middle slope of Mount Ikoma. It is said to have been founded by En no Gyoja and was a place where Kobo Daishi trained, but it saw great development when the monk Tankai entered the temple in 1678-79 (Enpo 6-7) during the Edo period. Tankai's local name was Hozan, and he was from what is now Tsu City, Mie Prefecture. Influenced by the spirit of revival and promotion of religious studies in the early Edo period, he studied esoteric Buddhism, practiced the precepts, and traveled from place to place. He then entered Hannya Cave on Mount Ikoma and founded a temple, which he named Daisho Mudoji Temple. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
