French painter. Born in Samaná, Santo Domingo, West Indies. Moved to Paris at the age of three. A pupil of Ingres, he showed a neoclassical style in his early days, but was also influenced by Delacroix and approached Romanticism. He acquired a unique sense of colour during a trip to Algeria, and left behind many decorative masterpieces based on history and mythology. As the teacher of Moreau and others, he influenced Symbolism. His representative works include "The Makeup of Estelle" (1841, Louvre Museum) and "Ancient Roman Bath" (1853, Louvre Museum).

フランスの画家。西インド諸島サント・ドミンゴのサマナ生れ。３歳の時パリに出る。アングルの弟子で初期には新古典主義的作風を示したが，ドラクロアの影響も受けロマン主義にも接近した。アルジェリア旅行で独自の色彩感覚を身につけ，歴史や神話に取材した装飾的な大作を多く残した。モローらの師として象徴主義に影響を与えている。代表作は《エステルの化粧》（1841年，ルーブル美術館蔵），《古代ローマの浴室》（1853年，同美術館蔵）など。
