Ikoma Incident - Ikoma Incident

Japanese:
Ikoma Incident - Ikoma Incident

A family turmoil occurred in the Ikoma family, lords of Takamatsu Domain in Sanuki Province (Kagawa Prefecture). The fourth lord, Takatoshi, inherited the family headship at a young age, so his maternal grandfather, Todo Takatora, served as his guardian. Senior vassals Maeno Sukezaemon and Ishizaki Wakasa gained favor with Takatora, ousted the national elder Ikoma Shogen, and seized power as Edo elders. Furthermore, they took advantage of the fact that Takatoshi's wife was the daughter of the Shogunate elder councilor Doi Toshikatsu, and ran the country as they pleased in Toshikatsu's name. In response to this, his son Tatewaki, who succeeded Shogen after his death, filed a complaint against Maeno and Ishizaki for their tyranny in 19 articles and filed a lawsuit against the Shogunate in 1637 (Kan'ei 14). After several investigations at the Hyojosho (council of judges), the Ikoma clan's land was confiscated, and Takatoshi was transferred to Yajima in Dewa Province (Akita Prefecture) with a fief of 10,000 koku. Maeno and Ishizaki were forced to commit seppuku, and their allies were sentenced to death. In contrast, Obito was made the custodian of the Matsue domain, and the case was settled with light punishment for the opponents.
