When a ray of light is incident from medium 1 with a high refractive index (refractive index: n ₁ ) towards medium 2 with a low refractive index (refractive index: n ₂ ), the ray is totally reflected without refraction at the boundary surface. This phenomenon occurs when the angle of incidence i is greater than angle i(/0), which is determined by sin i(/0) = n ₂ /n _1. i(/0) is called the critical angle, and when a ray of light is traveling from glass to air, it is 41°10'.
