Sanbashiki Gorge

This gorge is located in the Kannagawa River in the southwest of Gunma Prefecture, and extends from Onishi in Fujioka City, Taniguchi Village, to the Yuzurihara area, about 4 kilometers upstream. Sanbaishi is the name of the gorge itself, as well as the rocks found there. The rocks are beautiful greenstones of the Mikabu-type metamorphic rocks of the Nagatoro group, and the gorge is lined with cliffs on both sides, and strangely shaped rocks and bizarre stones lie on the riverbed. There are 48 stones with ancient names alone, and they blend beautifully with the clear stream. It is a national place of scenic beauty and natural monument. Sanbaishi are highly valued as greenish garden stones, and are sold throughout the prefecture and in the Keihin area. However, collecting them within the designated area is prohibited. Shimokubo Dam and Lake Kanna (circumference 11 kilometers), which were completed in 1968 (Showa 43) for multiple purposes including supplying water to Tokyo, are located just upstream from Sanbashiki Gorge.

群馬県南西部の神流川(かんながわ)の峡谷で、谷口集落の藤岡市(ふじおかし)鬼石(おにし)よりやや奥の譲原(ゆずりはら)地区より上流約4キロメートルの間をいう。三波石とは峡谷の名であるとともに、そこの岩石の名称でもある。岩石は長瀞(ながとろ)系御荷鉾(みかぶ)式変成岩の緑色岩で美しく、峡谷は両岸絶壁、河床には奇岩怪石が横たわり、古来名のあるものだけでも48石を数え、清流に調和して美観を呈す。国の名勝・天然記念物である。三波石は帯緑色の庭石として珍重され、県内各地や京浜地方に販売される。ただし指定区域内での採取は禁止されている。1968年（昭和43）東京都への上水供給などの多目的をもって竣工(しゅんこう)した下久保(しもくぼ)ダムと神流湖（周囲11キロメートル）は、三波石峡のすぐ上流にある。
