A freshwater fish of the family Cobicidae in the order Cypriniformes. It has local names such as mugina (Gifu Prefecture), sunasabi, and sunahabi (Tochigi Prefecture). It is endemic to Japan and is found throughout most of the country except Hokkaido and western Kyushu. It lives in shallow sandy or gravel bottoms near the shores of clear-water rivers and lakes. It often has a habit of burrowing to the bottom. It spawns from April to June. It is similar in shape to the loach, but is generally smaller at 5 to 12 cm in length. It has six whiskers. There is a vertical row of black spots on the sides of the body, and irregular black spots above that, on the dorsal fin, and on the tail fin. コイ目ドジョウ科の淡水魚。ムギナ(岐阜県),スナサビ,スナハビ(栃木県)などの地方名がある。日本特産種で北海道と九州西部を除くほぼ日本全国に分布。水の澄んだ川や湖の岸近くの浅所の砂,または砂れき底にすむ。よく底に潜る習性がある。産卵期は4~6月。形はドジョウに似るが,ドジョウよりも一般に小さく全長5~12cm。口ひげは6本。体側に黒い斑点が1縦列に並び,その上方や背びれ,尾びれなどにも不規則な黒斑がある。
