In August and September, the plant produces cymes in the leaf axils, with numerous white flowers. The flowers are 1.5-2 cm in diameter, with four white petal-like sepals that open in a cross shape. The petals are absent, and numerous stamens and pistils are found in the center. Numerous achenes are flattened and oval, 7-8 mm long, with white feathery styles extending to about 3 cm. It is a poisonous plant, and it is said that the juice from the plant can cause a rash on the skin. Plants in the same genus include the peony vine, the Japanese laurel vine, and the grass plant, as well as the ornamental plants cultivated as Japanese water lilies and Japanese quince.
