It is well known that the Trojans believed in the sacred power of the Skamander River and threw cows and horses into its depths as sacrifices, and that the Ganges River is said to have purifying powers, and that people from ancient times to the present have continued to bathe in it and dump their remains in it. Famous independent gods (spirits) that govern and control water include the Sumerian water god Enki (Ea in Babylonia), Adad or Hadad as the Akkadian rain god, Hapi, the Egyptian god who governs the Nile River, Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea, Neptune, the Roman god of the sea, and Nāga, the dragon god, a water god worshiped in India and other parts of Asia, including Japan. …
