Central League

Japanese: セントラル･リーグ

Along with the Pacific League, it is one of the professional baseball leagues in Japan. Its official name is the Central Baseball League. It is abbreviated as the Central League. Until 1949, the Japan Baseball Association, which had one league and eight teams, split up due to disagreements over the issue of new teams joining. In 1950, the Central League started with eight teams, adding new teams Hiroshima Carp, Nishinippon Pirates, Taiyo Whales, and JNR Swallows to the four teams Yomiuri Giants, Shochiku Robins, Chunichi Dragons, and Hanshin Tigers. Shochiku won the first official game, playing against the Pacific League's champion Mainichi Orions in the Japan Series that began that year, losing 2-4.

パシフィック･リーグとともに日本のプロ野球リーグの一つ。正称はセントラル野球連盟。略称セ･リーグ。1949年まで1リーグ8球団だった日本野球連盟が新球団参加問題で意見が一致せず分裂した。50年，読売ジャイアンツ(巨人)，松竹ロビンス，中日ドラゴンズ，阪神タイガースの4球団に新球団として広島カープ，西日本パイレーツ，大洋ホエールズ，国鉄スワローズを加えて，8球団でセントラル･リーグがスタートした。最初の公式戦の優勝は松竹で，この年から始まった日本シリーズでパシフィック･リーグの優勝チーム毎日オリオンズと対戦し，2勝4敗で敗れた。
