Metal fittings in Japanese architecture are divided into structural reinforcing metal fittings, decorative ornamental fittings (kazari fittings), practical support fittings for building fixtures and door fastenings, roof decorations for adding solemnity to buildings, eaves bells, and balustrades. Reinforcing metal fittings have been used since ancient times and include nails for fastening nageshi (railings), rafters, and backboards, dowel nails for joining thick boards such as door boards, mekasu (mekasu fastenings) for fastening floorboards and edging boards to joists from behind, and rivets for joining two pieces of material together. Nails are generally called wakugi (Japanese nails), and have a square cross section and a distinctive head. …
