Rinnoji Palace Headquarters

Japanese: 輪王寺宮門跡 - りんのうじのみやもんぜき

He was the head of Nikkozan, the kanrei of Toeizan Kan'ei-ji Temple, the head of the Tendai sect of Hieizan, and the head of the Hieizan temple monzeki. In 1613 (Keicho 18), Tenkai was appointed the head of Nikkozan, and in 1617 (Genna 3), he reburied Tokugawa Ieyasu's remains at Nikkozan. In 1624 (Kan'ei 1), the Edo Shogunate built Kan'ei-ji Temple in Shinobu-ga-oka, Ueno, and appointed Tenkai as its chief priest. After Tenkai's death, his disciple Kokai became the chief priest of Mount Nikko, and when he resigned in 1554 (Shoo 3), Emperor Gomizunoo's third son, Prince Morizumi (Moritsune Moritaka), became the chief priest of both Mount Nikko and Mount Toei. The following year, in 1555 (Meireki 1), Emperor Gomizunoo issued an imperial decree giving him the title of Rinnoji-no-miya, and the chief priest thereafter took on this title. In 1556, the three mountains of Hiei, Nikko, and Toei were made the head temple of the Tendai sect.

日光山を総括，東叡山寛永寺を管領，比叡山の天台座主を歴任し，比叡山諸門跡の首班に列した法親王。1613年(慶長18)天海が日光山貫主に補せられ，17年(元和3)徳川家康の遺骸を日光山に改葬した。江戸幕府は24年(寛永1)上野忍ヶ岡に寛永寺を建立し天海を住職とした。天海没後弟子公海が日光山住職となり，54年(承応3)辞職すると，後水尾天皇第3皇子守澄(守徴)法親王が日光山･東叡山住職を兼ねるに至り，翌55年(明暦1)後水尾上皇は院宣をもって輪王寺宮の勅号を下したので，以後住職はこの号を称し，56年比叡，日光，東叡3山をもって天台一宗総本寺とした。
