Saint John's
The capital of Antigua and Barbuda, the smallest country in the Caribbean. Population 21,154 (1991). Located in the northwest of Antigua, it is the commercial center of the country. In the 18th century, it was an important base for the British Navy in the West Indies. Nelson served here for three years as a young man. From the end of July to August, it holds the second most famous carnival in the Caribbean after Trinidad. [Yoshio Hashimoto]

Saint John's

The capital and largest city of the province of Newfoundland, Canada. Population: 95,770 (1991), urban area population: 175,909 (1992). Located near the eastern end of Newfoundland, it is known as a port city. It is said to have been discovered by J. Cabot at the end of the 15th century, and has since been known as an important fishing port in the northwest Atlantic fishing grounds. Industries include seafood processing, dairy products, beer, tobacco, and lumber, and it is also the commercial center of the province. In 1901, G. Marconi first received a wireless telegraph signal across the Atlantic, and there is a museum commemorating this.

カナダ,ニューファンドランド州の州都,同州最大都市。人口9万5770(1991),都市域人口17万5909(1992)。ニューファンドランド島の東端近くにあり,港湾都市として知られる。15世紀末にJ.カボットが発見したといわれ,以来北西大西洋漁場の重要な漁港として知られる。水産加工をはじめ酪製品,ビール,タバコ,木材などの工業があり,また州の商業の中心でもある。1901年にG.マルコーニが,大西洋を越えた無線電信を最初に受信した所であり,それを記念する博物館がある。
