The language of the Messapians and Iapyges, who lived in the southeastern tip of Italy before Christ. It is known from many inscriptions written in Greek characters from the 6th to 1st centuries BCE, as well as from proper nouns. It belongs to the Indo-European language family and is said to be close to Illyrian.
