King of France (reigned 1574-1589). Son of Henry II. During the Wars of Religion, he initially allied with the Catholics to oppress Protestants. Later, in order to suppress the power of the Guise family, he allied with the Huguenot leader Henry of Navarre (Henry IV) to oppose the Catholics. He was assassinated by the monk Clement during the Battle of Paris, and the Valois dynasty came to an end. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
