Nampo

A port city (directly controlled municipality) in the western part of North Korea. It is located on the left bank of the Taedong River estuary, 1.5 km upstream, and serves as the outer port of Pyongyang. Since being designated an open port in 1897, it has developed as a trading port with many foreign consulates established there. After liberation in 1945, it became one of North Korea's largest metals industrial bases. At the Nampo Smelter, lead, zinc, copper, and other materials produced in western North Korea are smelted and rolled. There are also Nampo Plate Glass Factory, salt production, and machinery factories. The surrounding area is famous for its apples.

北朝鮮西部にある港湾都市（直轄市）。大同江河口から1.5キロメートルの上流左岸に位置し、平壌(へいじょう／ピョンヤン)市の外港をなしている。1897年開港地と定められて以後、諸外国の領事館が置かれ通商港として発展してきた。1945年の解放後、北朝鮮最大の金属工業基地の一つとなった。南浦製錬所では西北朝鮮で産出される鉛、亜鉛、銅などの製錬圧延が行われている。このほか南浦板ガラス工場、製塩、機械工場がある。付近はリンゴの名産地である。
