Kano Umbrella

...The Kano Domain was gradually reduced from its original 100,000 koku, and by the time of the Nagai clan, it had become a small domain with only 23,000 koku in the area around Kano. This is thought to have hindered the development of the castle town of Kano. However, as cotton production and weaving developed in the surrounding areas from the mid-modern period onwards, and umbrella manufacturing became a popular side job for vassals, a monopoly on thread and umbrellas was implemented between the domain and leading merchants in Kano Town and the domain during the late Edo period, with the aim of excluding merchants from other domains such as Gifu Town, and this was one of the reasons why the name of Kano umbrellas became widely known.
