Creating a quantitative model of the economic system. Economic theory describes the economic system as a system of simultaneous equations. For example, if national income, interest rate, government spending, and money supply are Y , r , G , and M , respectively, and the consumption function, investment function, and money demand function are C ( Y ), I ( r ), and L ( r , Y ), respectively, Keynesian theory holds that national income and interest rate are determined as the solution to the simultaneous equations Y = C ( Y ) + I ( r ) + G , M = L ( r , Y ). This description of economic theory is only qualitative.
