Boatman

Japanese: 船頭物 - せんどうもの

A type of Kabuki dance. A group of pieces that turn the stylish and spirited figure of a boatman into dance, and they appeared frequently in the Henge dances (Hengemono) from the Bunsei period (1804-30). Some of the more famous pieces are as follows: (1) Otsue Boatman, Kiyomoto. Original title: Sing, Sing, The Aftermath of Otsue. Lyrics by Katsui Genpachi. Composed by Kiyomoto Saibei I. Choreography by Fujima Daisuke (II Kanjuro) and Nishikawa Senzo IV. First performed at the Nakamuraza Theater in Edo in September 1826 (Bunsei 9). One of the five Hengemono that first premiered as a remnant of Seki Sanjuro II's return to Sakanaga.

歌舞伎舞踊の一系統。粋で威勢のいい船頭の風姿を舞踊化した作品群で，化政期(1804‐30)以後変化（へんげ）舞踊(変化物)のなかに多く現れた。著名なものには次のような曲がある。(1)《大津絵船頭》　清元。本名題《歌へす歌へす余波大津絵（かえすがえすおなごりおおつえ）》。作詞勝井源八。作曲初世清元斎兵衛。振付藤間大助(2世勘十郎)，4世西川扇蔵。1826年(文政9)9月江戸中村座初演。2世関三十郎の帰坂名残として初演された五変化物の一つ。
