An old town in Yatsushiro County, Kumamoto Prefecture, located almost in the center of the Yatsushiro Plain. The Kagoshima Main Line runs through it. It is a rural area where rice and rush are cultivated. Most of the town area has been reclaimed land since the time of Kato Kiyomasa, and the town name comes from its area of 1,000 cho. In August 2005, it was incorporated into Yatsushiro City along with Kagami Town, Sakamoto Village, Toyo Village, and Izumi Village in Yatsushiro County. 11.18 km2 . 7,044 people (2003).
