…His first clear mark as a sculptor was his participation in the competition for the second portal of the Florence Baptistery (now the north portal), held in 1401-02 under the auspices of the Woolens Guild, in which he participated alongside Brunelleschi and Quercia. He was ultimately selected, and the prototype relief he produced for the competition, the bronze Sacrifice of Isaac, was more pictorial than sculptural, with a Gothic linear rhythm dominating the composition and the fine details typical of metalworkers. The second portal took about 20 years to complete, with the help of Ciuffagni, Donatello, Uccello, and Michelozzo. …
