Akamagaseki city

...Population: 259,795 (1995). Originally called Akamagaseki City, it was the prefecture's first city, but in 1902 it was renamed Shimonoseki City. In the lower reaches of the Ayaragi River along the Hibiki Nada Sea coast, there are many ruins, including the Yayoi period Ayaragigo ruins and the keyhole-shaped Jimbayama tumulus, and remains of the ancient jori system.
