Sendaihira

Japanese:
Sendaihira

It is a type of silk hakama fabric, but because it is so well-known, it is used as a general term for men's hakama fabric. The weave is plain weave or a mixture of plain weave and twill, and the constituent threads for both the warp and weft are dyed as is, with only the striped threads being degummed and dyed. Sometimes degummed threads are used for both the warp and weft. When weaving, the weft threads are hammered or soaked in water before beating to make the fabric tighter.

The origin of Sendai-daira dates back to when Date Tsunamura, the lord of the Sendai Date domain, invited the Nishijin weaver Komatsu Yaemon to begin weaving fabric to produce gifts for the shogunate and feudal lords, and gifts for his vassals. This was called Okuni-ori, and the hakama fabric he produced was particularly exquisite and highly praised by the feudal lords, and the fabric became known throughout the country under the name Sendai-daira.

Seigo Sendaihira is a type of weaving that follows the lineage of Seigo weaving, and refers to a type of weaving in which the combined weft threads are woven as a loose thread. As a follower of this tradition, Koda Yoshio (1929-) was designated as a holder of Important Intangible Cultural Properties (Living National Treasure) in 2002 (Heisei 14).
