Kawauchi Plain - Sendai Heiya

Japanese:
Kawauchi Plain - Sendai Heiya

An alluvial plain located in the downstream area of the Kawauchi River in the west of Kagoshima Prefecture. Satsuma-Sendai City occupies the area. It is a low-lying basin surrounded by relatively low mountain ranges, with the Satsuma-Sendai city area at its center. The surrounding mountains are mainly composed of Tertiary andesite (pyroxene andesite, hornblende andesite, etc.), but there are also highly dissected shirasu plateaus on the edges. There are small areas of Palaeozoic mountain massifs on both banks of the Kawauchi River estuary. The bottom of the basin is low in elevation, and there are many small tributaries flowing in from the surrounding mountains, making it a frequent flood-prone area. Rice fields are widely distributed outside the city. It has a long history of development, with the remains of the Satsuma Kokubunji Temple (a nationally designated historic site) and the remains of the jori system. Currently, it serves as a base for electricity supply from the Tsuruta Dam upstream, the thermal power plant on the right bank of the river mouth, and the nuclear power plant on the left bank.
