Kakuzensho - Kakuzensho

Japanese:
Kakuzensho - Kakuzensho

A Buddhist book from the Kamakura period. Written by Kakuzen (1143-?). Kakuzen was a monk whose pen name was Kontaibo and who was also called Saga Ajari. He studied under many famous masters of esoteric Buddhism, including those at Ninna-ji Temple. This book was written over a period of about 37 years, from 1176 (Angen 2) to 1213 (Kenryaku 3), after extensive research into ancient records at Kaju-ji Temple, Koyasan Temple, Daigo-ji Temple, and other temples, and describes Buddhist scriptures, rituals, and other religious practices. It is also called "Hyakukan-sho" (Excerpts from the One Hundred Volumes) because it is made up of 100 volumes in total. What makes the collection particularly valuable is that the 392 images are divided into nine sections, including Buddha, Kannon, Manjusri, and Bodhisattva, making it an indispensable resource for research into Buddhist statues related to Esoteric Buddhism, and is considered the highlight of Japan's icon collections.
