Japanese: 天演論 - てんえんろん

This is a translation of T.H. Huxley's Evolution and Ethics (1893), published in China at the end of the Qing Dynasty. It was translated by Yan Fu in 1896, released in a newspaper the following year, and published in book form in 1898. It sharply reflects the sense of crisis that China was facing as it was being colonized and its national destruction. The theory of evolution's formula of survival of the fittest and survival of the fittest had a tremendous influence on intellectuals such as Lu Xun and Hu Shi, and was the catalyst for Lu Xun's works such as A Brief Essay on Chinese Geology and Preface to the Cry.

中国で清朝末期に出されたT.H.ハクスリーの《進化と倫理》（1893年）の訳書。1896年厳復が訳し，翌年新聞発表，1898年単行本公刊。中国の植民地化と亡国の危機感を鋭く反映。進化論の説く優勝劣敗・適者生存の公式は魯迅，胡適ら知識人に絶大な影響を与え，魯迅の〈中国地質略論〉〈吶喊自序〉などの著作を生む契機となった。
