An ancient city in southern Mali. A key trade point in the Sahara Desert, connected to Timbuktu by the Niger River, it developed as a stopover point for water trade. Sun-dried brick buildings line the streets, and a great mosque stands tall in the center of the town. The 20m-high Great Mosque is repainted every year because the mud on its surface is washed away during the rainy season. Even today, a market is held here, and you can see vestiges of its prosperity as a trading city. It was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1988.
