Xuan-zheng-yuan (English: Xuan-zheng-yuan; Hsüan-chêng-yüan)

Japanese: 宣政院 - せんせいいん（英語表記）Xuan-zheng-yuan; Hsüan-chêng-yüan

A special central government office in China that was in charge of Buddhism in the Yuan Dynasty, especially Lamaism (→ Tibetan Buddhism), and the administration of Tibet. Kublai Khan was the first to build a General Administration Office, with a National Master (a Sakya sect pontiff had held this position since Phagpa) as its chief. In 1288, he renamed it the Xuan Zhengyuan and expanded the organization, with two Xuan Zhengyuan officials as chief officials under the National Master. Lamaism received special respect and protection from the Yuan Dynasty, so the organization of the Xuan Zhengyuan expanded further. A subordinate General Administration Office oversaw Chinese Buddhism.
