A city in the western part of Wakayama Prefecture, occupying the lower reaches of the Arida River. It was incorporated as a city in 1956. Urban areas have developed around Minoshima at the mouth of the river and Hatsushima in the north, and the Kisei Main Line runs through the city. The city is a major producer of Arita mandarins, and Minoshima developed as a shipping port. The entire mountainside is covered with mandarin orchards. The raw material for the city's specialty mosquito coils has changed from pyrethrum to chemicals, but they still account for the majority of the national production. Hatsushima is in the Kihoku petroleum industrial area, and is home to the Toa Fuel Company's refinery. 36.89 km2 . Population: 30,592 (2010).
