A part of the Frankish kingdom during the Merovingian dynasty. A term used to distinguish it from Neustria in the west and Burgundy in the southeast. It included what is now northeastern France and western and central Germany, and its mayor became the ancestor of the later Carolingian dynasty. At the beginning of the 7th century, it was united with other parts to form a unified kingdom, but in 632 Dagobert I appointed his son Sigebert III as king of Austrasia, and after that, the kingdom's capital was set at Metz and it had its own mayor. When the Carolingian mayor of Austrasia, Pepin the Elder, defeated Neustria in 687, Austrasia's hegemony over the other parts was established, and his illegitimate son Charles Martel became mayor of Austrasia, Neustria, and Burgundy. His son Pepin the Younger deposed the last Merovingian king and became king of all the Franks, founding the Carolingian dynasty.
