Hoof trimming

Japanese:
Hoof trimming

This refers to trimming the overgrown hooves of livestock. For cattle, sheep, and goats that are raised on pasture, the hooves will naturally wear down and so only shaping is required, but for those kept in barns, the horny part around the hooves grows too long, so they need to be trimmed.

If hooves become too long, the limbs of cattle and horses become weak and waste accumulates, causing various hoof diseases, while in sheep and goats it can cause hoof rot. Trimming is done early in the growing season for cattle, and then once every four months for sheep and goats, with pruning shears, hoof-trimming sickle or grinder to remove the overgrown horny parts. For horses, the horseshoes are removed once every 25 to 30 days, and the hoof wall and sole are trimmed. Trimming the hooves of cattle and horses is a laborious and skilled job, and in the case of horses in particular, it is carried out by highly skilled farriers.
