Red

It is said that in ancient times, "aka" meant bright and clear. Even when used as a color name, it does not necessarily correspond to a single color, but rather seems to have been used to indicate a color tendency. However, based on experience, reds were further subdivided and color names were given to these. In some ways, the everyday classification of red seems to be rougher today. For example, the words "aka" and "vermilion" are hardly used interchangeably these days.

The wavelength of light that corresponds to red is in the range of 640 to 780 nanometers. In the Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS) for general color names, the color red is given to colors with a hue of 50R, a brightness of 3.5 to 5.5, and a saturation of 9 to 13.

Red is often associated with the sun, blood, and fire, and some of the most well-known symbols of red are passion, excitement, love, and danger. When we see red, we feel flashy, warm, passionate, strong, dynamic, cheerful, and excited. In this way, the impression given by red is one of energy radiating outward. In terms of shapes, a circle gives a similar impression. And because it gives off a warm feeling, it is treated as a warm color. Also, when placed in the same position, red appears to be slightly more forward than blue, so it is also known as a forward-moving color.

Red is said to be highly stimulating and therefore easy to notice. Due to this, as well as the associations and symbolism it brings, it is used in traffic signals to indicate "stop" and on fire-related equipment. In terms of safety colors, red is used for fire extinguishers, fire alarms, etc., because of the visual properties of red. Preference for red is not necessarily general, and seems to show considerable bias.

「あか」は、古くは、明るい、明らかなことを意味していたといわれている。そして色の名前として用いられても、かならずしも単一の色に対応するというよりは、色の傾向を示すために用いられていたようである。ただ経験的に赤系統のものをさらに細分化していて、それに対して色名を与えている。赤に対しての日常的な区分は、ある意味で現在のほうが大ざっぱといえるようである。たとえば、赤と朱は現在ほとんど区別して使っていない。

　赤に対応する光の波長は、640～780ナノメートルの範囲である。一般色名の日本工業規格（JIS）では、色相50Rで、明度3.5～5.5、彩度9～13の範囲の色に、赤という色名をつけている。

　赤に対する連想は、太陽、血、炎などが多く、赤が象徴する代表的なものとしては、情熱、興奮、恋、危険などがあげられる。赤を見たときに生じる感じとしては、はでな、暖かい、情熱的な、強い、動的な、陽気な、興奮したといったものがあげられる。このように赤の印象は、外へ向けエネルギーを発散させるという感じである。図形では円などが印象としては類似している。そして暖かい感じを受けることから、暖色系の色として扱われる。また同じ位置にあるとき、青に比べやや前方に位置して見えるので、前進色ともよばれている。

　赤は刺激の性質として強いため、目につきやすいといわれる。このことと連想、象徴の内容などから、交通信号の「止まれ」を示すサインとして用いられたり、火に関係する器具類などに使用されたりしている。安全色彩において、赤は消火器、火災報知器などに使用することになっているのも、赤のもつ視覚的性質が考慮されているからである。赤に対する嗜好(しこう)はかならずしも一般的ではなく、かなり偏りを示すように思われる。
