White Clouds - Hakunanun

1895‐1979
Korean historian and politician. Born in North Jeolla Province. After studying at Suwon Agricultural and Forestry College and Tokyo University of Commerce (now Hitotsubashi University), he became a professor at Yeonhui College (now Yonsei University) and engaged in research into Korean history. His major works, "Social and Economic History of Korea" (1933) and "Social and Economic History of Korea, Part 1" (1937), are still considered classics as they were the first to apply the theory of social construct development stages based on historical materialism to Korean history. After liberation, he was active as a politician, and served as chairman of the New Democratic Party, chairman of the Democratic National Front, and vice chairman of the Working People's Party, before moving to North Korea.

朝鮮の歴史家，政治家。全羅北道生れ。水原高等農林学校，東京商科大学(現，一橋大学)に学んだ後，延禧専門学校(現，延世大学校)教授となり，朝鮮史の研究に従事。主著《朝鮮社会経済史》(1933)《朝鮮封建社会経済史･上》(1937)は，史的唯物論に基づく社会構成体的な発展段階論を朝鮮史にはじめて適用したものとして，今なお古典的な意味をもつ。解放後は政治家としても活躍し，新民党委員長，民主主義民族戦線議長，勤労人民党副委員長等を歴任した後，北朝鮮に赴いた。
