The capital of Pasco Department in central Peru. A mining town in the Andes Mountains. Population 77,700 (1990). Altitude 4,330m. Home to a large ore-dressing plant for the Cerro de Pasco mine. Most of the ore is transported to La Oroya, 130km south, for smelting. Silver deposits were discovered in 1630, and mining began in 1660, but the mine was closed in the mid-19th century when it was exhausted. It was reopened with the construction of a railroad in 1902, and open-cut mining of copper, zinc, lead, etc. is now underway.
