The UK's largest commercial television station. A conglomerate of private companies, it competes with the public broadcaster BBC. It was established in 1954 under the Television Act to introduce commercial television, and began broadcasting the following year in 1955. After the Broadcasting Act came into effect in 1990, it continued to merge and became one of the major private broadcasters in Europe.
