Zeeland - Zeeland (English spelling)

Zeeland - Zeeland (English spelling)
A province in the southwest of the Netherlands, bordering Belgium on the south. In ancient times, it was a regional name, meaning "country of the sea." Its area is 2,745 km2, and its population is 354,816 (1980). Its capital is Middelburg. Originally it consisted of eight islands at the mouth of the Scheldt-Maas estuary, but it has become almost entirely connected to the mainland through reclamation since the 17th century and the construction of a closure dike based on the Delta Plan that began in 1955. Since the late Middle Ages, Zeeland has prospered through trade with Britain across the shore, and was as powerful as Holland at the time of Dutch independence, but it has since been overwhelmed by Holland and has stagnated as a backward agricultural region.
