Shugakuin Imperial Villa

Japanese:
Shugakuin Imperial Villa
This villa is located at the western foot of Mt. Hiei in Shugakuin-cho, Sakyo-ku, Kyoto City. It was built by Emperor Gomizunoo himself from 1655 to 1659, and is known as one of the famous gardens of the Edo period, along with Katsura Imperial Villa. It consists of three teahouses, the upper, middle and lower, each with its own independent garden, connected by paths. The lower teahouse, Jugetsukan, is originally built in the sukiya-style shoin-style style, and has a garden with a pond at its center. The upper teahouse is the largest, and has a stroll-style garden with a boat ride around Yokuryu Pond, which was created by damming a mountain stream flowing from the middle of Mt. Hiei. Rinuntei is located at a high point, and the large evergreen trees trimmed on the slope leading to the pond are famous. The middle teahouse was founded as Rinkyu-ji Temple in 1668, centered around Rakushiken. The decorative shelf in the guest hall, which was relocated from Tofukumon'in's dressing room, is called the "Kasumi-dana."
