A Chinese poet and Confucian scholar from the late Edo period. He was commonly known as Kenkichi and his pen name was Kippo. Kyokuso was his pen name. He was originally called Akimura, and later took the name Baiton. He was posthumously given the posthumous name Bunbin Sensei. He was from Hita, Bungo Province (Hita City, Oita Prefecture), and was the youngest brother of Tanso. He became the adopted son of the childless Tanso for a time, and ran the Kan'i-en school, but he did not get along with the district magistrate Shionoya, so he left Hita in 1836 (Tenpo 7) and opened a school in Sakai, Senshu (Osaka Prefecture). He later established schools in Edo and Osaka, but his forte was poetry; in the anthology "Toei Poetry Selection," which brought together over a hundred poets from the Tokugawa period, Yu Quyuan (Yu Yuetsu) of the Qing dynasty allowed Kyokuso to occupy two volumes alone, praising him as "the crown jewel of eastern poets."
